Fractional CTO Services
Fractional CTO services for companies building something technical.
Senior technology leadership for product, platform, data and AI — part-time, embedded in your leadership team, accountable for what ships. Based in the Greater Toronto Area, working with clients across Canada and the United States.
Is this you?
When a company needs a fractional CTO.
A fractional CTO earns their retainer when technical decisions have started to compound — and the people making them don’t have the scar tissue yet.
Delivery has slowed and no one knows why
Releases take longer each quarter, estimates keep slipping, and every change seems to break something else.
A dev team without senior leadership
You have capable developers — or an outsourced partner — but nobody senior setting architecture, standards or priorities.
Technical debt is now a business problem
The platform that got you here can’t take you further, and you need someone who can plan a rebuild without stopping the business.
You’re committing to AI
You want to build AI into your product or operations and need an executive who can tell the difference between a demo and something that will hold up in production.
Investors or acquirers are doing diligence
You need your architecture, security and delivery process to withstand technical due diligence — and someone credible to represent it.

The choice
Fractional CTO, full-time CTO, or a dev shop?
All three get called “technology leadership.” They aren’t the same thing, and picking the wrong one is expensive.
- Fractional CTO
Senior technical judgement, part-time
Architecture, roadmap and engineering leadership without a full-time salary and equity. Best when the decisions are big but the day-to-day workload doesn’t fill an executive seat.
- Full-time CTO
Daily leadership and capacity
Right once technology is the product and you need an executive present every day. Expect a long search, a market-rate package and equity.
- Development agency
Hands to build
Good at executing a defined scope. An agency is not incentivized to challenge the scope, simplify the architecture or tell you the project shouldn’t happen.
- Often the answer
Fractional CTO plus your build team
A fractional CTO setting direction and standards over an in-house team or agency — the combination that gets the most out of a build budget.
How it works
A fractional CTO engagement, start to finish.
- Week 0
Consultation and scoping
A 30-minute conversation about what you’re building, who’s building it and where it’s stuck. If you don’t need a CTO, we’ll tell you.
- Weeks 1–4
Technical assessment
Architecture, codebase health, delivery process, team capability and roadmap — reviewed and presented as findings with a prioritized plan.
- Month 2
Direction and rhythm
Target architecture, standards, a sequenced roadmap and a delivery cadence with metrics your leadership team can see.
- Ongoing
Lead the build
Your fractional CTO runs technical leadership day to day: design reviews, prioritization, hiring, vendor oversight and progress reporting.
- Exit
Hand over cleanly
We build toward handover — to a permanent CTO or VP Engineering we help you hire, or to a lighter advisory retainer once the platform is stable.

FAQ
Questions we hear often
What is a fractional CTO?
A fractional CTO is an experienced Chief Technology Officer who leads your technology and product engineering part-time, on a retainer. They own architecture, the delivery roadmap, technical hiring and the standards your team builds to — at a fraction of the cost of a full-time CTO.
What is the difference between a fractional CTO and a fractional CIO?
The titles overlap, and many companies need both sets of skills from one person. In practice a CTO leans toward product, platform, architecture and engineering teams — what you build and sell. A CIO leans toward internal systems, infrastructure, security and vendors — what you run the business on. If you need the internal-operations side, see our fractional CIO services.
How much do fractional CTO services cost?
Engagements are priced as a monthly retainer against an agreed number of days, so you buy the time you need rather than a full-time salary, equity and benefits package. A light advisory retainer costs materially less than a hands-on mandate through a platform rebuild. We scope and price before you commit.
Can a fractional CTO lead our existing development team?
Yes. Many of our mandates are exactly this: an existing team of developers or an outsourced partner that lacks senior technical leadership. The fractional CTO sets architecture and standards, introduces a delivery rhythm, runs code and design reviews, and coaches the people already in place.
How quickly can a fractional CTO start?
Typically within two to three weeks. The first month is an assessment of your architecture, delivery process, team and roadmap, followed by a prioritized plan your leadership team signs off on.
Do you provide fractional CTO services outside Toronto?
Yes. We are based in the Greater Toronto Area and work on site across the GTA and southern Ontario, and remotely with clients across Canada and the United States, including U.S.-headquartered organizations.
